Open-Box Electronics: An Inspection Checklist That Saves Returns

Open-box is not refurbished. It is “someone else opened it.” That can mean a display unit, a changed-mind return, or a missing cable. The discount should pay you for that uncertainty.
In-store checklist
- Power on, check dead pixels and speaker rattle
- Count accessories against the box list
- Look at the serial / IMEI if it is a phone or laptop
- Ask whether the manufacturer warranty still starts from original sale
Online open-box
Read the condition grade (excellent vs satisfactory) as a return-risk score. Photograph unboxing. If the listing photos are stock images only, assume cosmetic wear.

Bottom line
A 15% open-box discount on a fragile gadget is rarely enough. 25–40% with a working test in front of you is the zone.
