The cheapest product tile is not always the cheapest checkout. Use this 10-minute method whenever an item costs more than a casual impulse buy.
Minute 1–2: Identify the exact SKU
Match model number, capacity, colorway, and bundle contents. “Similar” products are the #1 reason comparison shopping fails.
Minute 3–5: Check three sellers
Open:
- The brand’s official store
- One major marketplace
- One specialty retailer in that category
Write down item price only—ignore badges for now.
Minute 6–7: Add the real extras
- Shipping to your address
- Taxes / import fees if shown
- Required accessories sold separately
- Extended warranty upsells you do not need
Compare landed cost, not sticker price.
Minute 8: Evaluate trust signals
Seller rating, return policy length, authentic-product guarantees, and delivery promises matter. A $12 saving that destroys your return options is rarely smart.
Minute 9: Check recent price history (when available)
If you use a price-tracking tool or can see recent order history from friends/forums, ask: is today’s “sale” actually a normal price?
Minute 10: Decide with a rule
Buy only if landed cost beats your baseline and the seller’s policy is acceptable. Otherwise wait or choose a different model.
Quick example framing
Brand site: $79 + $0 shipping + easy returns.
Marketplace: $72 + $8 shipping + shorter returns.
Winner: often the brand site—unless you truly need the lower cash outlay and accept the policy tradeoff.
