REI’s membership is a lifetime fee, then a yearly dividend based on eligible purchases. The dividend is store credit, not cash. That still counts if you were going to buy socks and fuel anyway.

Break-even sketch

If the dividend is roughly 10% of eligible spend, a $30 membership is a rounding error after a couple of jackets. If you shop REI once every three years, the garage sale and member coupons have to do more work.

Garage sale reality

Used gear can be excellent. It can also be picked over in 20 minutes. Membership for garage sale access only is a maybe—treat it as entertainment with a chance of a tent, not as a guaranteed discount engine.

Bottom line

Join if REI is already your default for boots and layers. Do not join to become an outdoor person.
