Costco gets the cultural attention. Sam’s Club is often closer, cheaper to join, and stronger on some house-brand groceries. The membership fee is the easy part. Waste is the expensive part.
A two-column worksheet
Write last month’s grocery and gas spend. Estimate how much of it you would actually shift to the club. If the shift is under about $250 a month and you will not use gas, the fee is a maybe. If you already buy paper, chicken, and fuel in bulk, either club can clear the fee quickly.
Differences that actually show up
- Costco: Kirkland, stronger on some electronics and travel
- Sam’s: Scan & Go, often lower membership price, Plus cash rewards
We already ran a Costco-only calculator in Is a Costco Membership Worth It? Use that post if you are deciding Costco vs nothing. Use this one if you are deciding Costco vs Sam’s.
Bottom line
Pick the building you will drive to twice a month. A cheaper club you never visit is a donation.
