Three tells
- Compare the “compare at” to a real recent price on Nordstrom.com or another full-price retailer—not to the Rack tag alone.
- Check the style number. A close cousin with cheaper fabric is common in off-price.
- Factor in returns. Final-sale items need a higher discount to be worth the risk.
When Rack still wins
Known brands you have owned before, in a size you already trust, with a return window still open. Shoes and denim are higher-risk if you have never tried that last.
Bottom line
Treat Rack like a remainder bin with a search bar. The win is a specific item you already wanted, not a cart full of “70% off” you cannot return.
