Black Friday (and the wider holiday shopping window) rewards preparation more than midnight refreshing. Use this checklist in the weeks before peak sale events so you buy what you need—at a price you can defend.
1. Build a short wishlist (not a dream list)
Write down 5–15 items you were already planning to buy. Impulse categories are where “discounts” most often fail. For each item, note size/color/model so you do not settle for the wrong SKU under time pressure.
2. Capture a baseline price now
Screenshot or save the current price from 1–2 trusted retailers. When the sale hits, compare against your baseline—not against the merchant’s strikethrough “was” price alone.
3. Decide your maximum willing price
Set a walk-away number per item. If the deal does not beat it, skip. This single habit prevents most holiday overspend.
4. Check shipping and cutoff dates early
A great unit price with Christmas-Eve delivery is not a win. Note standard vs. expedited shipping costs and order deadlines for your region.
5. Read return windows before you click buy
Holiday return policies are often extended—but not always, and not for every category (beauty, opened electronics, custom goods). Confirm the policy on the product page.
6. Prefer payment methods with purchase protection
Where available, use cards or wallets that offer dispute rights and clearer statements. Keep order confirmations until the return window closes.
7. Watch for fake urgency patterns
- Timers that reset when you refresh
- Stock counters that jump oddly
- Codes that never apply at checkout
If checkout math does not match the landing-page claim, abandon the cart.
8. After the purchase: calendar the return deadline
Add a phone reminder a few days before the return window ends. Many “almost right” gifts become expensive clutter simply because the calendar was ignored.
